Warren man pleads no contest as charged ?to fatal hit and run in August 2023

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced that 46-year-old Justin Spangle, of Warren, pled no contest to charges stemming from a fatal hit and run crash in Roseville. On August 18, 2023, while operating a vehicle with a suspended license, Spangle struck a pedestrian and fled the scene. The victim, a 14-year-old boy with autism, sustained fatal injuries. Shortly after the crash, Spangle replaced his vehicle’s cracked windshield.

On Tuesday, May 5, on the day scheduled for his jury trial, Spangle pleaded no contest as charged before Judge Jennifer M. Faunce in Macomb County Circuit Court.
Spangle pled to the following charges:

• Operating – License Suspended, Revoked, Denied – Causing Death, a 15-year felony

• Tampering with Evidence – Criminal Case Punishable by More than 10 Years, a 10-year felony

• Failure to Stop at Scene of Accident Resulting in Serious Injury or Death, a 5-year felony

Defense counsel for Spangle requested an agreement from the judge to a sentence at the bottom end of the applicable guidelines, which call for 36 to 71 months in the Michigan Department of Corrections. Faunce accepted the requested agreement.

Spangle is scheduled to be sentenced before Faunce on Tuesday, June 23, at 8:30 a.m.

“This is a profoundly tragic case in which the defendant’s allegedly foolish and unlawful conduct directly caused the death of a child. My office will continue to pursue justice on behalf of the victim and his family, who will carry the weight of this loss for the rest of their lives,” said Peter J. Lucido.
