New guidelines expand food assistance for Oakland County Families

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has set new income guidelines to help families receive more nutritious food. Since June 1, 2026, the?Special Supplemental Nutrition Program?for?Women, Infants & Children?(WIC) income limits have been increased, and more Oakland County families may now qualify for benefits.

“WIC helps parents and families access food, nutrition education, breastfeeding support and valuable community resources,” said Kate Guzmán, Oakland County’s health officer. “WIC helps families build healthier futures. If your family may not have qualified in the past, I encourage you to reach out to us to learn whether you are now eligible for these important benefits.”

A family of four may now qualify with an annual gross income level of $61,050 ($29.35 per hour) or less. Families who receive Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families are automatically eligible for WIC.

In March, the WIC food packages were updated to include more plant-based, whole grain and nut/seed butter options. WIC continues to provide supplemental foods, such as milk, yogurt, eggs, bread, whole wheat pasta, fresh fruit and vegetables and infant formula, at certain grocery stores and pharmacies. The monthly food package can range from $70 to $250, depending on family size, life stage and package selections.

WIC improves the wellness of pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children up to 5 years old by offering nutritious food, nutrition education, breastfeeding education and support, client-centered services, health screenings and referrals to healthcare providers and other community resources. Oakland County WIC provides food assistance to an average of 11,300 participants monthly. In 2025, the program issued $10,297,648 for food to support Oakland County families and businesses.
