Ronald Acho passed away at age 80 after a courageous fight against brain cancer.
Arriving in Detroit from Iraq as a child named Najah in 1949, Ron Acho went on to graduate top 3 in his class at Visitation High School in 1963. He would graduate summa cum laude from University of Detroit in 1968 and from law school while working full-time at Ford, with a wife and two toddlers.
In 1974, Acho joined three other men in forming Cummings, McClorey, Davis, & Acho which would become a respected defense firm in Michigan and one of the most respected in the nation for municipal defense work, with offices in six states at its peak. Ron was the recipient of numerous awards throughout his career and was in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years.
Acho stayed active until the end, retaining his emeritus role at the law firm, while also serving on multiple boards, most of them charities such as Dollars for Scholars, New Creations Prison Outreach and the Chaldean Community Foundation. Acho was devoted to his Catholic roots, having also served on various boards of different Detroit diocesan parishes over the years, including St. Scholastica, Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Anne Detroit.
Acho is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rita, whom he met in 1967 at the University of Detroit; his son Jim, daughter Stephanie, son Greg (Sonya); grandchildren Anne Acho-Lockhart (Kyle), Michael Acho-Tartoni, Mary Katharine Acho-Tartoni and Meghan Rita Acho; siblings Andrew Acho (Dee), Margaret Tarnacki (the late Ralph), Linda Chantres (the late Gerald), Roy Acho (Debbie) and Joanne Longyear (Alan); as well as many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
A funeral took place Friday, August 21, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Farmington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are kindly suggested to the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.
