‘Being Aware of the Tone of Your Writing’ explored

The Michigan Judicial Institute and the Friend of the Court Bureau will present a webinar on “Being Aware of the Tone of Your Writing” Thursday, September 24, from 9 to 10 a.m. via Zoom.

When people speak, facial expressions and body language help convey meaning and set a certain tone. But in writing, none of those cues exist. In writing, there are only the words—and those words carry a tone, whether intended or not. Understanding the tone of one’s writing matters because it shapes how a message is received. The right tone can build collaboration and strengthen cooperation, while the wrong tone can unintentionally create confusion or tension.

This session will help participants to become more aware of the tone in their writing. It will examine practical ways to improve it through word choice, punctuation, sentence structure, and other useful techniques. By the end, attendees will have clear, actionable steps to ensure their writing communicates the message—and the tone—that is intended.

Speaking at the webinar will be Thomas Myers, court analyst, Problem Solving Courts, Field Services, State Court Administrative Office, Michigan Supreme Court.
