Law school to host 27th Annual McElroy Lecture Oct. 20 in Detroit

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will present the 27th Annual McElroy Lecture on Tuesday, October 20, from 5 to 6 p.m. in room 226 on campus, 651 East Jefferson Avenue Detroit. Reception immediately following the lecture will take place in the atrium.

This year’s lecture, titled “What Is Justice For? Law, Power, and Human Dignity” will be presented by Jelani Jefferson Exum, dean and Rose DiMartino and Karen Sue Smith Professor of Law at St. John’s University School of Law.

Drawing on her scholarship on sentencing, racial justice, and policing, as well as her experience leading mission-focused law schools, Jefferson Exum will explore the relationship between legal power, human dignity, and the purposes of justice. Her lecture will address the values that should guide the exercise of legal power and the role of legal education in cultivating an understanding of lawyers’ responsibility to preserve human dignity.

Jefferson Exum is the 10th dean of St. John’s University School of Law and holds the Rose DiMartino and Karen Sue Smith Professor of Law endowed chair. She has also held positions as the Dean and Philip J. McElroy Professor of Law at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, and as a professor at the University of Toledo College of Law and at the University of Kansas School of Law.  Additionally, she taught as a visiting professor at the University of Michigan Law School and as a fellow at Tulane Law School. At Toledo Law, she was the school’s inaugural associate dean for Diversity and Inclusion. At Detroit Mercy Law, the students honored her as Professor of the Year.

The McElroy Lecture Series provides a forum for prominent thinkers and leaders to address fundamental issues of law, religion, and society. The annual McElroy Lecture is made possible through a bequest from Detroit Mercy Law alumnus Philip J. McElroy.
