Lawsuit in rape case settled for $150,000
MOUNT CLEMENS (AP) -- Macomb County has agreed to pay $150,000 to settle a lawsuit by a man who spent nearly 12 years in prison for rape before winning an acquittal at a second trial.
The settlement ends a lawsuit by Jeffrey Moldowan, who already had reached a $2.8 million deal with the city of Warren and a $200,000 agreement with a dentist who linked Moldowan to bite marks on the victim.
Moldowan was convicted of abducting a former girlfriend, raping her and dumping her on a Detroit street in 1990. His conviction was thrown out in 2002 based on new witnesses and an expert who recanted her testimony about bite marks. Moldowan and another man were acquitted at a second trial.
Macomb County says the case was settled by its insurance company.
