Chicago man claims errors in Mich. sex offender records

DETROIT (AP) -- A Chicago man claims officials in suburban Detroit are miscoding sex offender conviction records, making less egregious offenders look like predators. The Detroit Free Press reported that 35-year-old Jason Zdebski filed a federal lawsuit last Thursday against officials in Oakland County that seeks certification as a class-action. He wants officials to change the coding and compensate him and others for emotional distress. The Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, which is among those named in the lawsuit, says it's investigating the matter. Zdebski's lawyers say he pleaded no contest in Oakland County Circuit Court in 2003 to exposing himself to an undercover police officer and was sentenced to six months of probation. Zdebski says Oakland County's practice caused him to be charged with failing to register as a sex offender in Illinois. Published: Mon, May 7, 2012
