Elder Abuse Awareness

The SAVE Task Force (Serving Adults Who Are Vulnerable and /or Elderly) hosted its seventh annual International Day of Elder Abuse Awareness Event at the Oakland County Commissioners’ Auditorium on Friday, June 15.

This event draws attention to the widespread and heinous crimes against elderly and vulnerable citizens and also recognizes the positive actions being taken by individuals and groups to combat abuse and exploitation.

The keynote speaker was  Michigan Department of Human Services Director Maura Corrigan (third from right).  She thanked SAVE members for their advocacy and testimony along with others across the state which has resulted in a package of ten bills that the governor signed recently.  This elder protection package of bills goes far to protect citizens from abuse and exploitation.

The Courage Awards were presented to Micheline Sommers (far right) of Oakland Family Services as an individual and HAVEN and Elder Law of Michigan as organizations for their important work in elder abuse protection. Accepting the awards on behalf of their respective organizations were HAVEN CEO Beth Morrison (far left) and Elder Law of Michigan’s Director of Elder Abuse Prevention Services Ron Tatro (third from right).

Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Edward Sosnick (second from right), co-founder of SAVE, was recognized for his leadership in the creation of a coordinated community response which has become a model for others around the state.

Oakland County Circuit Court Judge James Alexander (second from left) was happy to congratulate the honorees at the event.

In addition, actor Mickey Rooney was recognized for his testimony to Congress regarding his personal experience as a victim.
