Apartments used by Jewish students to be taxed

OAK PARK (AP) -- The Michigan appeals court says a Detroit-area apartment complex used by students who study a form of Judaism should not be free of property taxes. The court overturned a decision by the Michigan Tax Tribunal and ruled in favor of the city of Oak Park. The apartments are across the street from a synagogue where dozens of students spend most of their time. The apartments are owned by the synagogue but are not similar to a parsonage or monastery. The appeals court disagreed with the Tax Tribunal, which said the apartments mostly were used for teaching religion. The three-judge panel says the evidence doesn't support it.
