Wayne Law students getting 'snapped up' for positions

Despite concern nationwide about the legal job market, Wayne State University Law School students enjoyed tremendous success this summer getting jobs and internships. Students worked for law firms, corporations, judges, government agencies and nonprofit organizations, and employers continued to aggressively recruit Wayne Law students throughout the summer, said Krystal Gardner, assistant dean for Career Services at the Law School. "Indeed, employers that began recruiting in mid-summer were disappointed to find few candidates available," Gardner said. "Most Wayne Law students had already been snapped up." Rising third-year law student Angela Strobel applied for a job as a litigation law clerk with Potestivo & Associates PC in July, when her internship with the Wayne Mediation Center ended, and was offered the post as she drove home from the interview. She also works as a student assistant in the Law School's Admissions Office. "My new position is going very well so far," Strobel said. "The experience I'm gaining in this position is very valuable and a huge benefit to me. I enjoy the work and the fast-paced environment of the firm. The Wayne Law Career Services Office provided me with valuable tips, and reviewed my resume when I began my job search. Most of all, the CSO helped me build confidence in my skills and abilities, which ultimately helped me land my current position." Wayne Law's Career Services Office continues to connect students with professional opportunities. The CSO annually conducts on-campus interview programs, a public service career fair, a student pro bono program and mentoring programs. The CSO also hosts student field trips to law offices throughout southeast Michigan and Grand Rapids, a "Meet the Judges" reception for students and a "Bar Association Day" that brings representatives from the State Bar of Michigan as well as local and affinity bar associations to the Law School to meet with students. Every August, more than 200 second- and third-year law students, attorneys and judges gather at Comerica Park's Pepsi Porch for "An Evening at the Ballpark with Wayne Law''--a chance for all involved to network while they cheer on the Detroit Tigers. The event is presented by the CSO. Other services offered include individual career advising, resume and cover letter review, mock interviews and job shadow opportunities.
