Judge, legal professionals engage students at MLK event

On behalf of Patriot Week, Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren recently organized and led a Martin Luther King Jr. learning activity for over a 100 middle school students at the Cornerstone Schools Washington Parks Academy.  Other organizers and participants included the Damon Keith Center for Civil Rights, Wolverine Bar Association, and D. Augustus Straker Bar Association.

The event reviewed America’s founding First Principles and American Revolution, the promise of equality, the history of racial and gender oppression in America and substantial gains made in striving for equality, and the historic contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The students also engaged in small break-out sessions with Warren, attorneys, law students and teachers and discussed what they learned and how it was important to their own lives.

Principal Scott Cairo concluded the program with comments about how to keep the American Dream alive.  “You stand on the shoulders of countless unknown persons who struggled to give you the rights you enjoy today,” Cairo explained.  “You have to the responsibility to ensure that our freedoms and liberties are protected.”

Most students came away with a much greater appreciation of the long struggle for equality and liberty and their individual responsibility to defend it in the future.

After the event, Warren commented, “This was an outstanding activity to renew the spirit of America.  Our republic will not survive if our students are not well versed in our founding First Principles – such as equality – and understand that we will only enjoy the blessings of freedom so long as they fight for them.  Mr. Cairo and Cornerstone Charter Washington Parks Academy are superb role models for educators across the nation.”

Warren is the co-founder of Patriot Week with his then 10-year-old daughter Leah (www.PatriotWeek.org).  He is a former member of the State Board of Education and author of “America’s Survival Guide, How to Stop America’s Impending Suicide by Reclaiming Our First Principles and History.”  Patriot Week is anchored by the key dates of September 11 (the anniversary of the terrorist’s attacks) and September 17 (Constitution Day, the anniversary of when the United States Constitution was signed).

Patriot Week is a grassroots effort to celebrate and honor America by commemorating its First Principles (the rule of law, equality, unalienable rights, the Social Compact, limited government and the right to alter or abolish an oppressive government), key historical figures, founding documents and symbols.
