Commissioner supports annual human trafficking prevention effort

On Saturday, Aug. 11,  S.O.A.P. Metro Detroit will hold its 4th annual pre-Dream Cruise human trafficking prevention event, which will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Southfield Public Library, 26300 Evergreen Road in Southfield.

S.O.A.P. stands for “Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution” and its mission is to partner with local community volunteers, organizations, churches and law enforcement to help eradicate sex trafficking. Volunteers will package free soap labeled with a human trafficking hotline number and distribute it, along with information on missing youth, to local hotels and motels throughout Oakland County. The effort aims to raise awareness about human trafficking and reach victims who may be looking for resources or help.

“As a committed member of the Oakland County Human Trafficking Task Force, this effort is very important to me. We know human trafficking activity increases significantly during large community events, which makes coordinating hotel and motel outreach efforts during this time especially relevant and potentially lifesaving,” stated Oakland County Commissioner Janet Jackson (D-Southfield).

“S.O.A.P. Metro Detroit, with leaders Rhonda Hines and Devaun Chandler, seeks to inform and engage the public about this crime, and to provide critical resources to victims and their allies. This event will support the coordinated and collaborative efforts to fight human trafficking in the City of Southfield and throughout the county, since we know this is a widespread and serious problem that can touch any family or community.”

The event is free but prior registration is requested. Those looking for more information or to register can visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “S.O.A.P. Metro Detroit.” There are age restrictions for volunteers, which are listed on the event page. The event is supported by Jackson and Love Runs-Northridge Church. Support from other community groups looking to get involved is welcome.

Jackson is a longtime advocate for victims of human trafficking and has worked extensively to raise awareness about the crime and its impact on Oakland County youth. She serves on the Oakland County Human Trafficking Task Force and has organized and supported numerous outreach efforts in the community. She has also worked with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
