Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel last month joined a bipartisan alliance with 41 other attorneys general in a letter to the U.S. House and U.S. Senate Committees on Appropriations to request funding for the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) in Fiscal Year 2020.
Established by Congress in 1974, the Legal Services Corporation is a nonprofit organization that provides funding to 132 independent nonprofit legal aid programs domestically. These programs serve low-income individuals who are often disabled, veterans or members of military families, seniors, survivors of domestic violence, or victims of natural disasters.
“Legal Services Corporation has been vital to ensuring the accessibility of justice for individuals who, despite their hard work, face challenges to make ends meet,” said Nessel. “These are Americans from every background and age; however, 70 percent are women fighting to keep their families out of harm's way. Without this funding, tens of thousands of Michiganders may not receive the support they need and deserve.”
Nessel joins the letter’s co-sponsors, attorneys general of Massachusetts and Montana, along with attorneys general from Alaska, American Samoa, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Northern Mariana Islands, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
