Mock trial looks at free speech

A mock trial pitting free speech against hate speech was presented Friday, Oct. 25, by the Society of Active Retirees (SOAR) in Farmington Hills. Among the participants in the event at Adat Shalom Synagogue were (front row, left to right) Stephen Kaplan, an attorney and former assistant Macomb County prosecutor; Wayne State University Law School Prof. Robert Sedler; and Steven Steinhardt, a Mt. Clemens attorney; along with (back row, left to right) Joseph Kosmala, Mt. Clemens attorney; Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren; Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Carl Marlinga; and State Rep. Robert Wittenberg. Steinhardt, who produced the forum, said it was inspired by events and the court case that followed the Nazis’ quest to march on Skokie, Ill., in the 1970s. SOAR is a lifelong learning program affiliated with Wayne State University and the Road Scholar Institute Network.
