Atwater Brewery makes deal with Molson Coors

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit's largest brewery is being acquired by an international beer giant.

Atwater Brewery, which makes beer just a few blocks from the Detroit River, said Wednesday it's struck a deal with Tenth and Blake Beer, the craft beer arm of Molson Coors Beverage Co.

"Atwater has been a staple and a leader in the Michigan craft community for more than two decades, and we're thrilled to have them join Tenth and Blake," says Paul Verdu, vice president of Tenth and Blake.

Atwater produced more than 23,000 barrels in 2019 and is known for a wheat ale, Dirty Blonde, as well as Vanilla Java Porter.

Atwater owner Mark Rieth and his team will continue to run daily operations.

"We're profitable," Rieth said. "We had good growth last year, but to have a strategic partner with everything they bring to the table for a brand that's been around for 23 years, it's going to catapult us and bring us to the next level."

It's the second major Michigan beer deal in recent months. In August, the state's largest brewer, Founders Brewing of Grand Rapids, said Mahou San Miguel Group was taking a 90% stake.
