Community Policing Innovations Initiative focuses on safer communities in Oakland County

Oakland County cities, villages, and townships may apply for a community policing grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan (CFSM) through the end of 2021. The Community Policing Innovations Initiative will help “develop community-driven, substantive, and pragmatic changes in the way that policing and public safety services are provided.”

“When I was mayor of Ferndale, I saw first hand the improvements that can be made when the community and law enforcement work together,” said Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter. “In Oakland County, we want to be a partner, so that our residents and law enforcement can build bridges that will ultimately result in safer communities.”

Oakland County communities can benefit from support equivalent to $90,000: That includes $40,000 for a one-year period for technical assistance and $50,000 for implementation support to address priority areas of the fund. The programs that are supported through the grant will focus on one of five areas: use of force, officer accountability, disparate enforcement and treatment, reimagining public safety, and truth & reconciliation.

There is a rolling deadline for Oakland County applications through Dec. 31. Before applying, click here for more information on submitting a community policing proposal. To apply, submit applications to policingfund@cfsem.org. The grant is funded by Oakland County, Hudson-Webber Foundation, Ballmer Group, and CFSM.
