The Association for Certified E-Discovery Specialists – Detroit Chapter will host a watch party for “The Judge’s Panel” as part of ACEDS’ webinar series on “Emojis and E-Discovery” Thursday, November 10, from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Troy offices of Butzel Long, 201 W. Big Beaver Rd., Suite 1200, in Troy.
The panel will be moderated by attorney Kelly Twigger and feature U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Xavier Rodriguez, Western District of Texas, and U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge William Matthewman, Southern District of Florida. The panel will discuss how emoji are impacting discovery and recent case law decisions.
Twigger is a practicing attorney, software developer, consultant, writer, and speaker on issues in electronic discovery, the development and implementation of legal technology, and how to effectively use data in planning for and during litigation.
Twigger is a co-author of “Electronic Discovery and Records and Information Management,” and host of “Case of the Week at eDiscovery Assistant.” As principal at ESI Attorneys, She manages the boutique eDiscovery and information law firm that acts as operational business partners with its clients to advise law firms, corporations, and municipalities on all areas of electronic information including eDiscovery, privacy, cybersecurity, and information governance. Twigger is also the CEO of eDiscovery Assistant — a SaaS-based practical resource for litigators handling eDiscovery — that curates discovery decisions, rules, and additional content.
Rodriguez is a former Texas Supreme Court justice and currently sits on the bench as a United States District Judge for the Western District of Texas. He received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a master’s degree from the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs, and a law degree from the University of Texas Law School. Prior to assuming the bench, he was a partner in the international law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski (now known as Norton Rose Fulbright).
Rodriguez is the editor of “Essentials of E-Discovery” (TexasBarBooks 2d ed. 2021). He is a member of The Sedona Conference Judicial Advisory Board, the Georgetown Advanced E-Discovery Institute Advisory Board, and serves as the Distinguished Visiting Jurist-in-Residence and adjunct professor of law at the St. Mary’s University School of Law. He was elected to membership in the American Law Institute and is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the Texas Bar Foundation.
Matthewman was appointed to the federal bench in 2012 and sits in the West Palm Beach Division of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. As a U.S. magistrate judge he handles both civil and criminal cases, including pretrial matters and trials. Prior to joining the bench, Matthewman was a trial attorney who handled both criminal and civil cases, including high profile cases which were covered on live in-session Court TV, “Dateline,” “48 Hours,” and other programs. He received his B.S. degree and Masters degree from Florida International University in Miami, and he received his law degree from the University of Florida College of Law.
Matthewman has published several articles, including most recently the following law review article: “William D. Matthewman, Towards A New Paradigm For E-Discovery In Civil Litigation: A Judicial Perspective,” 71 Fla. L. Rev. 1261 (September, 2019). This Florida Law Review article deals with e-discovery and the 10 most important core concepts of the new e-discovery paradigm.
