Court elects Clement as new chief justice

The Michigan Supreme Court unanimously voted last Friday to elect Justice Elizabeth T. Clement as chief justice. Clement will fulfill the remainder of Justice Bridget M. McCormack’s term as chief.

Clement will continue her commitment to a judiciary that focuses on civility, transparency, and accountability while advancing the MSC’s mission to ensure courts are independent, accessible, engaged, and provide an efficient justice system that works for everyone.

“I appreciate the confidence of my colleagues and look forward to the opportunity to serve as Chief Justice, working collaboratively with all stakeholders in the judicial system for the benefit of the public,” said Clement. “We thank Justice McCormack for her leadership as Chief and for her service to the people of Michigan for the past 10 years.”

Clement joined the Michigan Supreme Court on November 17, 2017, becoming the 113th Justice and the 11th woman to serve on the bench.
