Walk to benefit clinic set for April 22
DETROIT – Registration is under way for The Salvation Army William Booth Legal Aid Clinic’s fifth annual Walk for Justice at the Detroit Zoo on Saturday, April 22 starting at 8 a.m.
Tickets are $40 through the day of the walk. Law students can register for 420.
All proceeds benefit The Salvation Army’s William Booth Legal Aid Clinic, which has helped resolve over 20,000 legal issues affecting low income families, individuals and U.S. military veterans.

Court hears dispute over First Amendment, religious school
DETROIT (AP) — A lawyer for a Roman Catholic school has argued that Michigan courts have no authority to intervene in admissions decisions.
The Michigan Supreme Court heard arguments Thursday in a dispute over whether a family can sue Notre Dame Preparatory School over its decision to reject their daughter in 2014.
Her parents say the Pontiac school discriminated against her because of a learning disability. Notre Dame Prep denies any discrimination. But attorney James Walsh's main argument was much broader.
He says government can't tell a church how to fill its pews or get tangled in admissions at a religious school.
But the girl's lawyer says the lawsuit makes no mention of religion and he urged justices to evaluate it purely as a case of discrimination under Michigan law.
Man receives $13M in lawsuit over wrongful conviction
CHICAGO (AP) — A federal jury has awarded $13 million to a man who spent 21 years in prison after signing a murder confession allegedly manufactured by Chicago police and Cook County prosecutors.
Deon Patrick, 45, wept Wednesday as U.S. District Judge Ronald Guzman announced the award.
Patrick was convicted in 1995 in the deaths of Sharon Haugabook and Jeffrey Lassiter. The 42-year-old Patrick long contended his confession was coerced.
Patrick's attorneys argued Chicago Police Department records show Patrick was locked up on a disorderly conduct charge at the time the two were killed in their apartment in 1992. The 20-year-old Patrick was arrested on drug charge His lawsuit claimed he signed the murder confession after being abused.
Prosecutors dismissed the murder charges against Patrick in 2014.
Boy, 8, craves burger, drives dad’s van a mile to McDonald’s
EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (AP) — A craving for a McDonald's cheeseburger apparently prompted an 8-year-old Ohio boy to take his 4-year-old sister for a ride in his dad's van.
East Palestine police Officer Jacob Koehler tells WJW-TV in Cleveland the father went to bed Sunday and the mother fell asleep on the couch with the kids.
Koehler says witnesses saw the boy driving and called police in the city, about 90 miles southeast of Cleveland.
He says the boy drove about a mile to the restaurant. Witnesses say the boy appeared to obey traffic laws.
Koehler says the boy told him he learned to drive by watching YouTube videos.
