Michigan in Perspective: Local History Conference Goes Virtual

The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) has announced that the 2021 Michigan in Perspective: Local History Conference will be presented as a virtual program due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The event will take place Friday-Saturday, March 19-20. The largest of the society’s three conferences, the event offers a diverse view of Michigan’s past and is open to anyone interested in state or regional history.

Early-bird registration ends Feb. 15.

The conference offers the following keynote sessions: former U.S. Sen. Carl Levin in conversation with Richard Wiener, HSM board member, as Levin shares stories of his time in the Senate; an introspective on U.S. District Court Judge Damon J. Keith and his legacy of defending civil rights and social justice; former Tiger Dave Rozema discussing his time on the Detroit Tigers during the 1984 season and beyond in conversation with HSM board member Dr. William Anderson; the life of "solutionary" Ahmad Rahman and his dedication to Detroit and its African-American community; and a look into the recent revitalization of the city of Detroit.

Attendees also have the opportunity to choose from 32 breakout sessions that address local and statewide history, including “Living with the Enemy: World War II POWs in Michigan”; “The Anishinaabe Women of Mackinac”; “Building the Modern World: Albert Kahn in Detroit”; “What Happened to the Cannons? Historic Fort Wayne”; “Beyond the Stereotype: Native People Then and Now”; “We Can Do It! The Rosies of Willow Run”; and “The Not So Open Road:
Detroit's Green Book.” The full lineup can be found in the conference’s brochure.

The Historical Society of Michigan is the state’s oldest cultural organization, founded in 1828. A nongovernmental nonprofit, the society focuses on publications, conferences, education, awards and recognition programming, and support for local history organizations to preserve and promote Michigan’s rich history.
