Economic Development Dept. scores top honors

Oakland County's Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs was honored last Thursday for its part in landing an $11 million investment by a Japanese auto supplier, and for its One Stop Shop Business Center. The Commercial Board of Realtors (CBOR) honored the county with a "Leader of the Pack" award for landing what it called the economic development "deal of the year." Teijin Advanced Composites America located its only U.S. office in Auburn Hills. The company had been considering a competing site in Ohio. Irene Spanos, economic development director, and David Schreiber, who leads the business development team, accepted the award during a luncheon for about 200 people at the Dearborn Inn. The department's One Stop Shop Business Center was also honored with a Sunrise Pinnacle economic development award last Tgursday during a breakfast at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester. The award was given by the Rochester Regional Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by OU Inc., a business incubator. Lola Are is the One Stop Shop supervisor. The awards honor area businesses and leaders for their innovation, success and contributions to the quality of life in the community. County Executive L. Brooks Patterson congratulated Deputy County Executive Matt Gibb, Spanos and the department and said the honors demonstrated the scope of services offered by the department whether the client is an international company or a mom-and-pop business. "Our economic development department continues to position the county globally as one of the premier destinations in the country to develop a business while acting as a resource for entrepreneurs and small business owners who are looking for help getting their operation off the ground," Patterson said. "I've been around long enough to know that while one or two people accept an award, there are a host of people behind the scenes who make valuable contributions to the success of the program. I applaud Matt and the entire department for their hard work." The One Stop Shop Business Center is located on the main floor of the Executive Office Building, 2100 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford, and offers business counseling services at no or minimal charges, custom mapping and aerial photography of the county dating back to 1963.
