Commissioner promotes campaign against sexual exploitation of children

Oakland County Commissioner Janet Jackson, in partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will host a special meeting, on Monday, Oct. 28, at the Southfield Field Zone. The meeting is part of the national Campaign Against Sexual Exploitation (CASE) that is being implemented by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and will help fight Human Trafficking. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's Diversity Outreach Coordinator for the External Affairs Division, Russell Petty, will make a presentation regarding the CASE Campaign and the NetSmartz, internet safety initiative. He will share resources and information about this ever-rising industry of human trafficking, especially in the Southfield and Metro Detroit Area. Jackson will host this special informational meeting to help facilitate collaboration among area organizations and area experts dedicated to stopping human trafficking on the latest tools used to fight this crime. The goal of this effort will be to create a study group that will lead to the formation of a special taskforce that will establish a comprehensive countywide campaign around the issue of human trafficking. On Monday, Oct. 28, the first information sharing meeting will include representatives from HAVEN, Youth Assistance, Michigan State Police Detective Sergeant Ed Price, Oakland County Sheriff's Office's Division of Sexual Exploitation and Human Trafficking, Southfield Police, Oakland County Children's Village and other child welfare agencies. This event is not open to the public, but only to those stakeholders who will serve as members of the county-wide study group and taskforce. "Due to the most arrests during the recent nationwide sweep, with Detroit ranking second in the country, and Southfield and Madison Heights having the highest arrests, there needs to be a multi-agency initiative coordinated to address this growing problem in our county," stated Jackson.
