Court accepts Detroit bankruptcy appeals
DETROIT (AP) -- A federal appeals court has agreed to accept direct appeals to a judge's decision that Detroit is eligible to fix its finances in bankruptcy court.
The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals' decision last Friday means those appeals can bypass U.S. District Court in Detroit.
Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes ruled in December that the city was eligible for Chapter 9 protection. Appeals were filed by several creditors, including the city's pension funds.
State-appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr's spokesman Bill Nowling says the appeals court's decision wouldn't change Detroit's plan of adjustment, which was filed last Friday. The plan serves as a blueprint for the city's road out of bankruptcy.
