Judge Shalina Kumar (center) was sworn in December 23 as the newest U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Michigan by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Denise Page Hood at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit. Kumar, who until last month was chief judge of Oakland County Circuit Court, is the first person of South Asian descent to be nominated for a federal judgeship in Michigan. She was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 17 and President Biden signed her commission on December 21.  Among those attending Kumar’s swearing-in ceremony were (left to right) U.S. District Court Judge David M. Lawson, U.S. District Court Judge Laurie J. Michelson, U.S. District Court Chief Judge Denise Page Hood, Kumar, Kent County Circuit Court Judge Christopher Yates, U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain and U.S. District Court Judge Sean Cox.
