Voters pass Birmingham Public Schools 2026 bond to enhance school safety and facilities

Birmingham Public Schools (BPS) has announced the successful passage of its 2026 bond proposal following strong support from local community voters. The approved measure, which passed with 66% of voters in favor, paves the way for comprehensive district-wide improvements designed to keep students safe while enhancing the educational environment for years to come.

“We are deeply grateful to our community for its overwhelming support in passing the Birmingham Public Schools bond,” said Dr. Embekka Roberson, superintendent of Birmingham Public Schools. “This critical investment directly strengthens school safety, modernizes aging infrastructure, and expands hands-on learning opportunities for our students. Our community's continued trust reinforces Birmingham Public Schools’ place as a leader in education in Oakland County and beyond.”

The 2026 bond initiative focuses on key operational, facility, and academic priorities across district schools, including:

• Enhancing district-wide security systems, door access controls, and emergency response infrastructure.

• Replacing and improving aging school boilers, heating systems, and building roofs to ensure secure, efficient operations.

• Building inclusive, fully accessible play structures and outdoor recreational facilities for elementary students.

• Expanding hands-on STEM learning spaces, instructional technology, and modern classroom environments.

“This bond effort reflects the shared commitment of our families, staff, and neighbors in prioritizing student success,” said Nicole Spencer, Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education president. “Investing in our school facilities, with no increase to the current tax rates, creates environments that are conducive to student achievement and fosters a culture of well-being across our schools. We remain committed to executing these projects with full transparency, independent oversight, and fiscal responsibility.”

Implementation and design planning for the initial phase of bond projects will begin in early 2027, with construction schedules phased over the coming years to minimize disruption to classroom learning.
