Neithercut Legal Educational Fund Scholarships available from foundation

The Neithercut Fund of the Genesee County Bar Foundation, which is committed to the continuing legal education of its members who are either sole practitioners or members of law firm, is soliciting grant applications for funding consideration.

The fund was established and funded by attorney Edward Neithercut and his spouse, Libby Neithercut. Mr. Neithercut had been a member of the bar for more than 69 years. He was instrumental in the creation of the foundation as a qualified charitable entity. The foundation has assets of more than $1.4 million.

Judge Geoffrey Neithercut, a member of the Foundation Board, said, “Edward loved the law and he was a lawyer’s lawyer. He was proud of Flint and the
Genesee County Bar. He was proud of his family’s three generations in the law.”

The community, according to a spokesperson for the Genesee County Bar Foundation, “lost a great attorney and the Foundation lost a great supporter” with Neithercut’s passing in October 2019 at the age of 95.

The scholarship grants were the brainchild of Randolph Piper, another member of the Foundation Board. He knew the Neithercuts wished to help attorneys access continuing legal education.

The board of the foundation policy is to encourage attorneys to attend legal education programs and seminars by paying 60 percent of the cost of tuition per attorney per year, not to exceed $500 per attorney per year. The funds will be allocated from the Neithercut Fund up to a maximum of $10,000 or a different amount determined by the board from time to time.

Attorneys who meet the following criteria are eligible:

(1) Recipients must be current full members of the Genesee County Bar Association.

(2) Applicants must prove paid attendance at any Institute of Continuing Legal Education Seminar, American Bankruptcy Institute, Federal Bar Association Bankruptcy Section, or Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan.

(3) Applicants must be in the private practice of law.

Members of the Genesee County Bar Association automatically become members of the Foundation. To take advantage of fund’s financial opportunity, contact GCBA/GCBF Executive Director Tatilia “Tina” Burroughs at 810-232-6000 or email tyb@gcbalaw.org to join the bar association and to apply for a grant.
