The event offers an opportunity for the Birmingham Public Schools community to connect with military veterans by honoring and celebrating their service. Student volunteers from Wylie E. Groves High School and Ernest W. Seaholm High School will greet and escort the honorees to the brunch. The event will feature a performance from the Birmingham Groves Choir and offer a platform for veterans to share their personal stories of service.
Veteran attendees will also enjoy cards and letters from elementary students from across Birmingham Public Schools and a digital presentation from middle schoolers.
Historically, more than 50 veterans and active-duty military have attended the celebration and the event continues to grow each year since it began in 2017, said Joan Crampton, a retired BPS administrator who organizes the event.
“This event provides students with a meaningful opportunity to connect with the service and sacrifice of our military members while honoring their dedication and commitment to our country,” said Crampton, who has many family members who have served, including her father, who served during World War II. “There is real value in bringing a direct connection to Veterans Day for students.”
This year’s Veterans Brunch takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 9, at the district’s Education and Administration Center at 31301 Evergreen Road in Beverly Hills.
“We are proud of this annual tradition at Birmingham Public Schools that demonstrates to students the importance of honoring the service and sacrifice made by our veterans,” said Birmingham Public Schools Superintendent Embekka Roberson. “Our students need to understand we have true American heroes living among us, and teaching them about this is part of the well-rounded education we offer that prepares students for success.”
