State representative announces high court candidacy

State Representative Kyra Harris Bolden officially announced her candidacy for Michigan Supreme Court last week, saying “I’m excited to seek the endorsement of the Michigan Democratic Party. I’m ready to put in the work to ensure that the Michigan Supreme Court stays fair and just for all Michiganders. No one will work harder.”

Bolden added: “As a former judicial clerk and attorney, I understand the importance of having empathetic, thoughtful jurists from all walks of life, and I am ready to hit the ground running with support all over the state. I look forward to meeting with voters and constituent groups throughout Michigan over the next eight months.”

The Michigan Democratic Party will be holding its endorsement convention on April 9 at the Huntington Center in Detroit.

Bolden has been endorsed by the Michigan Association for Justice, SEIU Michigan, Michigan Education Association Democratic Educators Caucus, Attorney General Dana Nessel, Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence, and Congresswoman Haley Stevens.

Bolden is serving her second term representing Michigan’s 35th House District and is a member of the Insurance and Judiciary committees. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules.

A graduate of Southfield Public Schools, Bolden received her bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University and then graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law.

After receiving her law degree, Bolden became a civil litigation attorney. She is an active member of her community, serving as a member of the National Congress of Black Women-Oakland County, the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and as a commissioner of the Total Living Commission for the city of Southfield.

Bolden has received several coveted honors, including the 2020 Michigan Chronicle 40 Under 40 honoree, 2021 Legislative Economic Development Champion Award, and the 2021 Michigan Credit Union League Legislator of the Year award.
